Rachel and Paul ChandlerA story in today's Times suggests that the Somali Pirates holding Rachel and Paul Chandler have reduced their ransom demand from £4.5 million to less than £2 million.  A spokesman for the pirates has apparently suggested that 'they might release the couple if they can recoup their “expenses”. He put those at around $2 million, claiming that they included the cost of 150 guards, renting vehicles and food.'  (Image courtesy of www.savethechandlers.com)

The spokesman said that couple are said to be being held in separate locations near the coastal town of Haradheere in case the British military tried to rescue them, and had not seen each other since a Somali doctor visited them last month.  Further news can be found on the 'Save the Chandlers' website.

HMSTV Challenger heads back to New Zealand PDF Print E-mail

ChallengerHMSTV Challenger (Army) was approximately 300 nm East of the Chatham Islands on Thursday 11 Feb when the skipper, Becky Walford, reported that the mainsail mast track had lifted from the mast for a distance of about 3m in the area of the top shroud fitting.

This damage prevents the mainsail from being hoisted fully and so the crew needed to make some urgent repairs. The other two yachts participating in Exercise TRANSGLOBE, Adventure (Royal Navy) and Discoverer (RAF), converged on Challenger’s position and a transfer of spares and tools to make good the damage has since been completed. The skippers of Adventure and Discoverer have checked their own mast tracks for damage and have found none and have turned Eastwards to resume the passage to Montevideo.

TeamSurv LogoLeisure and commercial boaters could soon benefit from more accurate depth information, thanks to a research and development project awarded to a European consortium.

The TeamSurv consortium offers sailors and powerboaters the opportunity to join a community that collects and shares depth information recorded by vessels’ existing depth sounder equipment. Depth data, along with the vessel’s position, are automatically logged and stored in real time, either by a software utility running on a Windows™ PC or using a dedicated hardware logging device.

Circ GuideAuthor Samantha Steele has just set up a new website for people thinking about a UK / Ireland circumnavigation. We published a review of her neat little book 'UK & Ireland Circumnavigator's Guide' with the comment "There’s scope for the book to be improved and developed in future, and it may well become one of those evergreen cruising guides that appears in regularly updated and expanded editions over decades."  She's asking the sailing community to help expand the book by sending in hints, tips, articles and personal experience of UK waters.
