Rosie in HolyheadAs Rosie & Brian prepare to leave Holyhead for a live-aboard life in the Med, Rosie describes the final preparations.

We are getting to know a few people on the marina. Not least Mike and Lesley of Sherlock Foams who we see most weekends. Mike has fixed down our spray hood and regaled us with many tales of sailing and motorboating, and this weekend we took delivery of our smart new cockpit cushions – even down to a curved one for the helmsman’s seat. Other faces become more familiar as we pass them on the pontoons and we have now worked out who owns what and where! Sue in the office knows us well now, especially as some of our purchases are delivered there for collection at our next visit.

Rosie & Brian 5 - Fitting Out and Clearing the House PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 June 2009 08:27

Alexora in HolyheadIn part 5 of their move to sail around the world, Rosie and Brian describe the house clearing and fitting out. Rosie writes:

I finished work at the end of April with a big night out send-off which was great fun. However it was a relief to know that I was now free to spend all my time preparing for our big adventure. The task and shopping list rapidly grew to 3 pages classified into boat stuff, house stuff and all the administrative things that have to be done. We are spending about 3 days at home mid week and 4 day weekends on Alixora.

Rosie & Brian's Big Adventure: Part 4 - Rhu to Holyhead - by Sea PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 April 2009 07:42
MoonsetWe spent the last two weeks of March thoroughly frightening ourselves with the thought of setting off in our own boat across the wild Irish sea! Sleepless nights and churning stomachs mixed with logical knowledge that we were perfectly capable of doing this – but we were both very nervous! I made various calls to get the Small Ship Register re-registration underway (the previous owner had de-registered), booked a place at Holyhead marina, and got a tonnage survey organised for the SSR. We worked out a rough zigzag passage from Scotland via Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man to get to Holyhead. Neither of us had done much night sailing, and we felt that daytime sailing was as much as we wanted to do for our first trip.

Rosie & Brian's Big Adventure - Part 3 - Fitting out PDF Print E-mail

Rosie at the helmRosie & Brian have decided to sell up and sail the world. Sailers is following their big adventure. This second installment, written by Rosie, describes the choosing of their yacht.

How do you decide what to call your first boat (or any boat for that matter)? We went through all sorts of options – sisters’ first names (too corny); Greek Goddesses (none original enough or pronounceable); culling from our favourite science fiction (Clear Air Turbulence was an option but a bit of a mouthful for radio comms); and then finally decided that we would keep the name she has – Alixora. As it turned out, it was a good decision.

AlexoraRosie & Brian have decided to sell up and sail the world. Sailers is following their big adventure. This second installment, written by Rosie, describes the choosing of their yacht.

The two week Christmas break was spent scouring the online advertisements for boats, making lists, and preparing ourselves mentally for the big change to our lives.

Compiling a shortlist of potential boats was hard work – both mentally and physically – hours and days scanning specifications and filling in a spreadsheet with the details we had decided were important to our selection. Some of the basic information was easy to locate but it took some digging to find the rest that we needed.
