The Minimum Boat by Sam Llewellyn PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 December 2009 13:56

The minimum boatThis little compliation of Sam Llewellyn's articles, written for practical boat owner, is a lovely fun read. Anyone who has rubbed shoulders or rubbing strakes with the local marina crew will recognise, and love, the humour. With little vignettes of the small boat yachting life, Sam covers such things as anchoring, fishing, alcohol and marine sanitation.  We look forward hugely to the next article on e-borders!

These little tongue-in-cheek diatribes are illustrated with Mike Peyton's cartoons (though some of them are looking a little long in the tooth these days), and the whole is packaged in a neat A5 size booklet not much larger than an RYA instruction booklet.  In fact, the reality of some of the experience contained within might replace the worthy RYA handbooks with something a little more like reality!

Well worth the £8.99 for a fireside read before the reality of scraping bottoms and re-doing the anti-foul hits in the early spring.

The Minimum Boat is published by Adlard Coles Nautical, price £8.99, ISBN 978-1-4081-9999-2

Sailing Barge Master PDF Print E-mail

Sailing Barge MasterSailing Barge Master by Captain George Winn, Chaffcutter Books, £12.95.

This delightful book, subtitled The Story of a Victorian Bargeman, was written more than 70 years ago. Unlike most of the literature about Thames barges, which tends to be written from a nostalgic perspective, looking back at the vanished era of sail power, this book was written in the heyday of these magnificent craft, now kept alive by enthusiasts and preservation trusts.

Handling Storms At SeaFive secrets of heavy weather sailing

This recently published book is an absolute 'must buy' for any serious cruising yachtsman.  Hal Roth has sailed twice around the world single-handed, crossed the pacific five times, the Atlantic eleven times, and has rounded Cape Horn three times. He has logged more than 200,000 miles under sail.  So his advice is not only worth reading, it's worth keeping handy on board.

Devil's Rock PDF Print E-mail

Devil's RockA first novel by Chris Speyer

“Devil’s Rock, a ghostly adventure set on the Cornish coast,  is a great summer read for anyone who enjoys a modern day sailing adventure, a gripping mystery, and tales of smuggling and wrecking”, says the publisher.
“When Zaki finds a bracelet and an ancient skeleton, little does he know that he is also stumbling across a mystery that goes back generations – a mystery that involves ruthless shipwreckers, an innocent young woman and a quest for life’.
I'm a bit churlish about yachting novels, so when Sailers was sent a review copy of Devil's Rock by Chris Speyer, it went onto the ‘maybe read’ pile.  But when I was hunting for some books to take with me on the latest yacht delivery, I grabbed this one as part of the bunch.

The Boat Data Book PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 June 2009 11:34

The Boat Data Boook'The Boat Data Book' is a fantastic little reference book stuffed full of specifications for Anchors, Winches, Deck Fittings, Cabin Interiors, Shackles, Fastenings, Rigging, Steering and Ventilation.  It also has some very hand conversion tables, and above all, is written by someone who has been desiging yachts to great acclaim for most of his working life.

Ian Nicolson is a senior partner with A Mylne & Co, and is well known as a classic yacht designer.  He has put together a handy reference book for anyone wanting to check on the specification of a  propellor to make the most of their engine, or what size of anchor chain to buy, or what tools to take with you on board, or in fact just about anything to do with yacht or boat data - even down to the clearing space needed for hanging your oilies.

The success of this little book is reflected in the fact thatit is now in it's sixth edition.  If you are thinking of re-fitting, or simply need to know where to go to find the load limits on your wooden mast or spar, here's the book!
